Challenge

Sudan has been devastated by the conflict that is ongoing since April 2023. Over 8 million people have been forced from their homes, with millions facing extreme hunger, chronic insecurity, and limited access to basic services. Health systems have largely collapsed, especially in remote and conflict-affected areas. As a result, maternal and infant mortality remain alarmingly high, while communities struggle to access even the most basic healthcare. Water access is equally critical—recurring droughts and the destruction of infrastructure have severely limited access to safe drinking water, making the spread of disease even more likely.

Response
  • Since theoutbreak of conflict in April 2023, Alight has reached nearly 4 million people with lifesaving services, including health care, immunizations, clean water access, maternal and child health support, and emergency relief for displaced families. Operating in some of the hardest-hit and most underserved areas, Alight has implemented 41 projects over the past two years thanks to the dedication of local staff, the trust of communities, and the support of partners and donors. Even amid the collapse of systems and growing humanitarian needs, Alight remains deeply rooted in co-creation and committed to showing up, listening, and responding with dignity and compassion.
Fighting Malnutrition in Adilla

Alight’s Stabilization Center in Adilla stands as a beacon of hope for families facing one of the world’s worst hunger crises.  The center provides lifesaving care to children suffering from acute malnutrition with medical complications. Following a recent expansion, the center now includes specialized treatment areas, a communal dining space, and even a play area—blending medical care with dignity, education, and emotional healing.

A Lifeline Restored: Rebuilding East Darfur's Dialysis Center

After an airstrike destroyed the Renal Dialysis Center at Ad Daein Teaching Hospital in East Darfur, patients with kidney failure were left stranded—some traveling hundreds of kilometers in search of care, others losing their lives without access to treatment. In partnership with the World Health Organization and the East Darfur State Ministry of Health, Alight led a restoration project, and in March 2024, the center welcomed back its first patients.

Restoring Access to Clean Water in Alengiz

In conflict-affected Alengiz, Al Jazeera, fetching water once meant long walks to unsafe open wells, physical exhaustion, and unaffordable costs. The water was murky and dangerous, fueling the spread of cholera and other illnesses. It all changed in November 2023, when Alight, with support from the Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance, rehabilitated the local water station. The water station now provides safe drinking water to both displaced and host communities across the state.

Confronting the Insulin Crisis in Ed Daein

When a severe insulin shortage struck Ed Daein in April 2025, Alight’s health team, supported by the Sudan Humanitarian Fund, acted quickly to restore access for diabetes patients. They introduced real-time tracking, prioritized critical cases, and partnered with local suppliers to deliver insulin to even the most remote areas. At clinics like Al Safa, patients received free medication along with lab services and personalized care. Faisal, a father of nine displaced from Nyala, shared, “This support is the difference between life and death for many of us.”
